History

Giving Birth To An Industry

From how Shawinigan gave birth to the aluminum industry in Canada, to how it is shaping a greener tomorrow for future generations.

1901

First Aluminum Pour in Canada

Major historical event: The first cast of aluminum on Canadian soil was achieved in Shawinigan, marking the beginning of the aluminum industry in the region.

1942

New Plant Operation Begins

To increase production capacity in Shawinigan during World War II, a new site was built. The electrolysis plant (potrooms) began operations under the Alcan (Aluminum Company of Canada) banner and remains in operation today.

1957

Casting Center Opens

The casting center opened its doors and began operating alongside the already established electrolysis facilities.

Transition: Electrolysis Closure and New Beginning

In 2014, we transitioned from smelting to focus exclusively on our greatest strength: world-class casting. Now operating as Shawinigan Aluminium inc. under the Sotrem-Maltech Group, we have sharpened our expertise to deliver the specialized aluminum billets our team has pioneered for decades. We didn't just stay open; we evolved to lead.
